“The
Zico Chain's debut release is unlike much around in the UK at the
moment; an unremitting, bass-heavy mix of alt rock and punk, it announces
the arrival of a very special band” (Hassle Records - http://www.hasslerecords.com/)
After ‘The Zico Chain’ impressing me earlier in the year
on a support tour, their self titled album impresses me even more.
It’s a short 15minute, 6 track alum, which hits hard and fast
with at the start of track 1 all through the album until the last
chord of track 6.
The album kicks off with ‘Rohypnol’ (aka ‘The Date
Rape Drug’), after a small amount of feedback and 2 hi-hat hits
the song kicks in at a fairly fast tempo. Singing about teenage angst
the song definitely deserves the title. ‘This Thing’ comes
in with a very catchy grunge riff. At 2:58 long ‘This Thing’
is the longest track on the album.
As the feedback ends ‘This Thing’, ‘Roll over’
brings all instruments straight into the song. ‘Roll Over’
has a punk feel to the chorus and even a short burst of a guitar solo
at about 1:38.
‘Social Suicide’ is a hard hitting track with another
very catchy riff for the bridge. The verse vocal melody reminds me
vaguely of that in ‘Disturbed – Remember’. There
is yet another guitar solo in this track, more along the shred side
of things this time.
Track 5 is called ‘Brain’, I’m not sure if this
is intentional but the intro/verse riff is similar to the ‘This
Thing’ riff, with one or two notes changed slightly. Even with
it sounding similar it is another hard hitting track and the shortest
on the album, 2:05 to be exact.
After the rest of the album you would think there is no way to keep
the tempo up and be able to hit just as hard. ‘The lonely ones’
starts with the drums as the bass slowly introduces it self. The verse
is similar to the intro with Drum and Bass only. After the last of
3 guitar solos on this album, the tempo increases even more. The track
ends on this fast pace with the singer screaming “…God
Your Full Of Shit”
