Vengeance
by SpeedTheory
Released 2005
Wolverhampton’s Speed Theory prove that there is a wealth of talent touring the pubs & clubs of Britain, one of many bands needing a break to start making that stratospheric climb. Having paid their dues in their hometown and now venturing further afield, their EP “Vengeance” proves that they have passed the first rungs on that lofty ladder.
Consisting of three tracks, the first two “Vengeance Is Mine” and “Cancer” spit vitriol and pound away in true metal fashion. Vocalist & Guitarist Wes shows a range that goes from angry howls that conjure up visions of pain and anguish to a clear style that focuses the aggression into a distinctive focussed bite. Guitarist JD helps out matching Wes’s style as his guitar shreds the songs to pieces and compliments the bass monster of Bob Gibbons seamlessly but never loses its personality. Alex’s drumming is tight and precise but never emotionless, instead pounding away in a barrage of percussion that threatens to push your ears through your head.
Closer “T.I.C.” takes the anger of the first two, and injects it with a Slipknotesque style, particularly in the vocals and highlighting Alex’s rhythmic drum technique. More varied, with several passages that give you a chance to take a breath before engulfing you in another slab of rage. It demonstrates that Speed Theory have what it takes to rise above the multitude of Pantera/Slayer wannabes.
As with any band at the stage of releasing demos the live environment is where they shine, but winning Metal Hammers “Demo Of The Year” accolade in 2005 (and to be featured in their April 2006 issue), they demonstrate that they’re ahead of the game. Watch out for these guys near you soon.
