GuilFest 2008 continue to put the ‘E’ in eclectic with their latest additions to the bill for July 4/5/6, with the announcement that Royworld, Zucchero, Babyhead, Seth Lakeman and Sonic Boom Six have now been confirmed to join the (previously announced) line-up of Blondie, Levellers, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, Kula Shaker, Cerys Matthews, From The Jam, Freak Power, Bowling For Soup, Dodgy, Richie Havens, The Aliens, The Damned & Dreadzone.
GuilFest, held in Guildford’s idyllic Stoke Park, has a long tradition of seeking out the hottest new talent just before they hit the big time, having previously promoted the likes of James Blunt, Newton Faulkner, Sandi Thom and Jamie Callum.
Royworld, currently being championed by Radio One’s Jo Whiley, who made the band’s upcoming single ‘Dust’, released on May 19th, her ‘Pet Sound’ for the last week of April, are sure to follow in their footsteps. Also being championed by Dermot O’Leary on BBC Radio Two, Royworld, who formed at London’s Goldsmiths in 2006, are one of the brightest new indie rock stars in the cosmos.
Italian Rock singer Zucchero, whose "Senza una Donna" (Without a Woman) duet with Paul Young was a top 5 UK hit single in 1991, will be performing on the Main Stage, sponsored by Commercial Radio, on Sunday July 6th. A European legend, Zucchero, who has sold tens of millions of albums worldwide and collaborated with the likes of Eric Clapton, Sting, Bono, Miles Davis, Sheryl Crow etc. in the past, sold out his last UK concert at The Royal Albert Hall in May 2004.
Mercury prize (2005) nominee Seth Lakeman, who won “singer of the year” and “best album” at the 2007 Radio 2 Folk awards, will grace the Ents24 stage on Sunday 6th July. Recently signed to KT Tunstall’s label Relentless, (Part of EMI), Devon’s Seth Lakeman, who is fast becoming a definitive name in the folk world, will release his third album in June, just in time for GuilFest.
Combining the funky dance rhythms of ska and reggae with a taste for classic hip hop, 8-piece Babyhead, who have established themselves as an unrivalled dance floor band with a huge live following over the last couple of years, will invade the Ents 24 Stage on Saturday July 5th.
Sonic Boom Six, whose compelling soundclash has been described as “Notting Hill Carnival on a punk CD”, will also grace the Ents 24 Stage on Saturday July 5th. Few bands can so smoothly mix dancefloor-savvy elements of reggae, jungle and ska with the rigorous commentary of hip-hop whilst retaining enough grit and aggression to be an active fixture of the UK's punk scene.
