PRESS RELEASES - March 2008
31/03/2008 Artist: Torche
Title: Meanderthal

Label: Hydra Head Records

Release Date: May 12th 2008

Description: One night some months ago we had a dream. Not like a Martin Luther King-type dream, with little kids of all races and nationalities holding hands and shit like that. No, we had a more realistic dream—okay, okay, it was the middle of the day and we were high and maybe jerking off, so technically it was more of a fantasy—but the dream we had was that one of our favourite bands would be on our label and together we would release one of the most satisfying records in the history of forever. And the heavens would part, the Billboard charts would collapse under the sheer sonic awesomeness, and the world would become a better place—a place where everyone had free health care and a money tree in their backyard and a hot trophy wife or strapping young houseboy or whatever. And that band, ladies and gentlemen, was Torche. And wouldn’t you know it, that shit totally came true (we’re waiting on the health care, the money tree, the houseboy and the Billboard thing, but still). And that record—in case you’re having trouble keeping up here—is Meanderthal. Call it the band’s second official full-length (after their 2005 self-titled debut via our good friends at Robotic Empire) and follow-up to last year’s six-song mini-epic In Return, released exclusively on hallucinogenic vinyl. Call it the latest and greatest bomb-string stoner pop/thunder rock/doom pop classic from Torche mastermind Steve Brooks and his fellow hook heroes. Call it the sweetest, catchiest, hugest riff colossus since Sky Valley. Shit, call it Album Of The Year if you want. That’s what we’re going with, anyway.

25/03/2008 The Sound of Silence / Here Again
Double A side : Available for free throughout April 08 via Myspace

Hello darkness, my old friend: I've come to talk with you again

Smith 6079 release their latest single a double A side featuring a cover of the epic Simon & Garfunkel track The Sound of Silence and the brand new track Here Again.

In restless dreams I walked alone : Narrow streets of cobblestone

The band picked up the Industry award for 2007 BEST NEW BAND at the Glasswerk New Music Awards in London late last year and they also scooped the BEST VIDEO award for Kill Romeo, a supremely dark and quirky video directed by Martin Denham to accompany last years debut single.

People talking without speaking : People hearing without listening

Formed in Manchester, England only two years ago. The band set out on a musical mission to ‘drop bombs’ with their unique sound and stunning live set which take the form of a great event, mixing quiet and calm with a subconscious, hypnotic mantra that soon converts the non believers. For a band who tread so near the edge, they have captured, twisted and taken one of the most iconic tunes of modern time and given it the unique Smith 6079 identity and mixed it with the epic Woodbine ridden vocals of lead singer Moon. Here Again is a modern observation on not believing everything you read and strikes a cord with the Orwellian links.

Meatier than Kasabian and more fulfilling than Death from Above 1979, Smith 6079 have kindled a musical fire which might just burn down the world
BBC Online

Sublime Mediterranean guitars, interspersed with an echoey-organ sound effects.
Sandman

And the people bowed and prayed : To the neon god they made

The band have achieved cult status in their home city of Manchester. A status confirmed when Fly magazine saw the band live and named them as 'The Ones To Watch'. Five brooding, dark and complex characters form Smith 6079 and all bring their unique musical take to the table to create a truly captivating and raw sound.

The bands live sound was instantly picked up on last year by Martin Elbourne, resulting in the band playing the main stage at the huge JerseyLive Festival. You can catch the unique live set next at The Academy 3 in Manchester on April 1st.

KOOPA

PIED PIPER RECORDS SIGN KOOPA AND CONFIRM

MARK HOPPUS OF BLINK 182 SIGNS ON TO PRODUCE ALBUM

Pied Piper Records, Nashville, USA have confirmed that Koopa will join forces with Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus to produce their debut album. The band recently joined the label’s roster, signing a four-album deal.

Over the past year, Koopa has made music history by becoming the first ever unsigned band to make it into the UK Top 40. They have had three singles in 2007 chart in the UK top 40, most recently reaching number 16 with their latest release “The Crash” in November 2007.

With Blink 182 being a major influence on Koopa, the band are excited to have the opportunity to work with Mark Hoppus on the album. Mark is well known for producing Blink-182 and +44, but he has also produced albums for New Found Glory, Simple Plan and Motion City Soundtrack"They will cut the record at the Los Angeles studio owned by Hoppus and Travis Barker. Long-time Rick Rubin protégé Chris Holmes (Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Stadium Arcadium), will engineer the record.

The three-piece band combines the talent of brothers Ollie Cooper (guitar and vocals) and Stu Cooper (drums) along with Joe Murphy (bass and vocals). Koopa, who originally formed in 2002, has taken the UK by storm and created a buzz seldom seen by an unsigned band. Their eclectic mixture of punk, pop and rock has seen them develop into the most exciting act in the UK music scene today.

Craig Cumming, President of Pied Piper Records, has anxiously awaited the addition of the group to the label.

“Koopa is one of the most exciting bands in the world right now. Their success so far as an independent, unsigned group is admirable. We are proud to be their label and look forward to bringing the world their music for years to come” said Cumming.

Koopa capped an amazing 2007 by winning 3 awards at The Glasswerk Music Award in London late last year and the band also recorded with the likes of Christian Wright, who has recently worked on projects with Kaiser Chiefs, Graham Coxon, Biffy Clyro and Hot Chip.

Work on their album is due to start in early April 2008. A tour of the USA will follow the album’s release including a performance at Wave on March 15th 2008 as part of the infamous South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX. Shows in the UK and Australia will also follow.

ELLIOT MINOR

New Single: ‘Parallel Worlds’ out on Warner Bros. / Reposession Records April 7th 2008

Self Titled Debut Album out April 14th

Already the biggest UK underground band that are quietly infiltrating the mainstream, York quintet Elliot Minor will crash into mainstream consciousness when they release their self-titled debut album on April 14th on Repossession Records / Warner Bros. Records.

Produced by Jim Wirt (Incubus, Hoobastank, Something Corporate) and mixed by Neal Avron (Yellowcard, New Found Glory, Fall Out Boy), the album finds Elliot Minor mixing approaches from the piano-infused hard rock of ‘Time After Time’ to the sonically charged ‘Parallel Worlds’, which is embellished with grandiose orchestration. They deliver pitch perfect three-way vocal harmonies on the infectious ‘The White One is Evil’ and add an undertone of ultra-melodic punk to ‘Still Figuring Out’.

The album features the hit singles ‘Jessica’ (#19) ,‘The White One Is Evil’ (#27) and ‘Still Figuring Out’ (#17). The album will be preceded by the infectious single, ‘Parallel Worlds, on April 7th.

After endlessly working their way towards bigger venues on each and every headline tour, Elliot Minor signed a major record deal with Warner Bros. Records towards the end of 2007. With three hits already under their belt, more than 1.9-million MySpace views and some of the most popular webisodes on YouTube, the band are poised to break in a major fashion in 2008. They’ve also played to a 10,000 capacity crowd at the Dimebag Darrell stage at Download and have also toured as guests to Fall Out Boy.

“A lot of the harmonies are classically based, so that whole side of my background is represented,” says vocalist/guitarist Alex Davies who, like the rest of the band, comes from classically trained background. “Then there’s the whole band performances backed by an orchestra that really emphasizes those instruments and the chord progressions.”

Elliot Minor are currently embarking upon an extensive UK tour that will conclude with their largest headline show to date at London’s Astoria on April 12th. The guys will also be supporting Simple Plan on their European Tour in March/April.

'...a towering beast of a rock band!' NME 8/10

'...they're sure to accomplish truly great things. This is guitar music at its most pure and vital...If we had more bands like Brigade to reinforce the strength of our homegrown music scene, who knows what heights it could reach.' ROCKSOUND 8/10

'Brigade may become what has been needed for so long, a British band that appreciate, create, and are loyal to rock music in it's purest form.' TUNED 9/10

'...another fantastic UK rock band about to break through into the mainstream.' ZERO

'...Brigade have the confidence and ability to strike out in pretty much any direction they choose...They could mature into one of the UK's most important bands.' KERRANG!

Here Comes The Crusade……….

If there was ever a band to capture the essence of powerful dynamics, emotional sincerity and perfectly crafted songwriting then Brigade are that band. Residing in London but with roots in Suffolk, Japan and Bristol, Brigade are a shining example of a band that fall outside the remit of genre classification. No rising young band can take a music fan on such an emotional roller coaster journey as Brigade.

Here’s a band that write enormous songs; songs that wrap themselves around you like a grappling, hugging bear and won’t let go!

When it came to the creation of second album ‘Come Morning We Fight’, Brigade’s only option was to aim their sights high – in every sense of the word. ‘Come Morning We Fight’ sounds huge. It’s an album that towers over the majority of today’s rock bands and will ensure Brigade catapult into the major playing field. Every ounce a contender for the rock album of 2008, ‘Come Morning We Fight’ is a maniacal masterpiece of sure-fire rock hits. ‘What Are You Waiting For’ is a bold opening statement of intent: punchy, dynamic and raunchy. First single ‘Pilot’ is an infectious and atmospheric heart-wrenching ditty, while ‘Slow Dives & Alibis’ illustrates the band’s power, musical complexities and frantic hard-hitting drive. Ensuring maximum diversity, ‘Sink Sink Swim’ is a somber and yet uplifting, unashamed pop song.

Recorded at Monnow Valley Studio (where luminaries such as Led Zeppelin, Biffy Clyro, and Manic Street Preachers amongst many have recorded), Brigade enlisted the skills of Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Feeder. Oceansize) to record and produce this magnificent opus. The icing on the cake saw this beauty being mastered in New York at Sterling Sound by Steve Fallone (The Strokes, TV On The Radio, Kim Gordon).

But strip this scenario down, take away the name-dropping, and you’re still left with an incredible and extraordinary primary ingredient – a truly inspirational band.

While 2006’s ‘Lights’ was a debut from a band who were tentatively finding their own feet and direction, ‘Come Morning We Fight’ is testament to a group who have assertively honed their sound, challenged themselves as musicians, dared to experiment outside the norm, and taken immense strides forward in their outlook. For the first time in their career Brigade united as songwriters, ensuring that every song was created as a team effort and all voices were heard.
Says frontman Will Simpson: “We have aimed to write songs that will stand the test of time and sit up there with the best of what British rock music has to offer. This album has been a massive challenge, we’ve pushed ourselves to the limits in every way. We’ve worked with one of the world’s best producers with a track record that we all, as a band, aspire to sit alongside. We truly believe we have accomplished what we set out to do.”

Lyrically, Simpson has expanded his horizons to explore uncharted territories, giving ‘Come Morning…’ a broader universal edge. “I've tried to step out of my own experiences for the first time and try to comment on other people's lives and branched into darker areas. I fail to comprehend certain things you see on the news or hear about every day and also you are affected by the happenings in the lives of those closest to you,” he explains, before joking: “Oh, and there's a song about zombies too!”

The band have also welcomed the addition of new drummer Andrew Kearton, who replaced original sticksman Nathaniel Finbow. By Simpson’s own admission the change has transformed Brigade from a bunch of musicians into a “complete unit”. “I can't believe how seamlessly Andrew has fitted in and it feels like we've known him for years. He's such a nice guy and a fantastic drummer, and has nailed everything on the record so we are buzzing. Before, it was hard to feel that we all shared exactly the same goals.”

Since Brigade’s formation in 2003, the four-piece have turned heads at every opportunity – right from when Will Simpson moved from Bristol to London with the sole intention of forming a band with like-minded individuals.

An advert in Loot resulted in the first incarnation of Brigade, who played their first gig at the Bull & Gate in London’s Kentish Town in September 03. A few reshuffles later and Brigade soon impressed Mighty Atom Records (Funeral For A Friend’s first home) to ink an EP and album deal with the band. High profile tours and shows with the likes of Biffy Clyro, Fightstar, Sucioperro, Minus The Bear, and Aereogramme have ensured Brigade have earned their stripes on the road, building up an ever increasing loyal army of fans as they march forward.

The arrival of ‘Come Morning We Fight’ will only see this continue.
“We haven't been afraid this time to try things we wouldn't normally think we could pull off, and we’ve surprised ourselves that the results sound so natural. This is the real beginning of what Brigade can really give to people,” smiles Simpson.
In battle there is no law, in the music industry only the strong survive. Bands and trends come and go, but only bands of a truly special caliber will leave their mark in musical history. With ‘Come Morning We Fight’ Brigade are set to do just that.

THE MACCABEES

The Maccabees announce surprise tour of intimate venues to unveil new songs

The Maccabees ended 2007 on a high with a triumphant sold-out date at London’s Roundhouse and great acclaim for their debut album “Colour It In”: Artrocker made it their Album of The Year, Xfm short-listed it for their Debut Album of The Year and NME called it “The best alt.pop record of 2007, no contest”. ‘Blood Stays On The Blade’ 6 track mini album

Released May 12th 2008 on Thirty Days of Night

St Albans hardcore outfit Your Demise will release their mini album, “Blood Stays on The Blade” through Leeds based indie label Thirty Days of Night (Gallows, Architects, Eternal Lord, Bring Me The Horizon). Having gone through approx. 11 member changes since their conception in 2004, the quintet are back with firm line up, and six tracks of crushing metallic hardcore. Using elements of early 80’s punk, thrash metal and modern hardcore, “Blood Stays On The Blade” is a musical tour de force, and one that is certain to throw the band up with the leaders of UK hardcore.

Coming from the same area as UK heroes Gallows, Enter Shikari and Friendly Fires the band are quick to show their appreciation for the bands. “We actually put on their first ever show and Lee (Barratt, drummer for Gallows) has drummed with us before on a few occasions” says front man George Noble. The band have spent the last few years playing all over the UK & Europe (+2 nights spent in an Antwerp jail, on charges of intent to use and possession of BB guns!) with literally hundreds of bands including Earth Crisis, Sick of it All, Shai Hulud, Bring Me The Horizon, The Chariot, Sworn Enemy, Madball and I Killed The Prom Queen and have recently completed a mammoth tour with

Enter Shikari and Hundred Reasons.

09/03/2008 CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN - I Am The Golden Gate Bridge
(Jezus Factory Records) Release date: March 31st

The creature, aka Aldo Struyf, was born when the 13th Floor Elevators were recording Bull Of The Woods, was still young when the Butthole Surfers wrote The Revenge Of Anus Presley, can't get enough of Barkmarket's Gimmick and is waiting for the new Ween album to come out. While still best known as the guitar and keyboard player in Millionaire and/or Mark Lanegan’s chosen one for synths on his last album 'Bubblegum' and European touring, the creature is raising the stakes with his own project and very first full album «I Am The Golden Gate Bridge» . This first full-length is the band's third contribution to the history of rock after the two previously released and aptly titled 12 inch EPs «The Snake» (2005) and «Kill The Snake» (2006). Creature's melodic sensibilities tend to be shaped by the soaring pop of '60s and '70s bands like the largely forgotten but utterly fabulous 13th Floor Elevators and Butthole Surfers, while amping up the raw power and nihilistic energy and propelling it into the post-punk age. His thin razor-edged guitar is wonderfully completed by the nervous low-end rattling machine-gun percussion of Millionaire drummer Dave Schroyen (also ex-Evil Superstar), while long time friend and colleague Jan Wygers, one of Mauro’s Grooms (and ex bassplayer of the legendary Sexmachines), vouches for bass riffs that help make the sudden time changes and the sometimes not-quite-linear song structures all the more intriguing. Recently, after being blown away by the (unfortunately) late Belgian hardcore band 'Dead Stop', the creature also invited Michiel Van Cleuvenbergen (guitarist and songwriter of Dead Stop) to join the band. «I Am The Golden Gate Bridge» makes up for a sharp and explosive yet strangely melodic album, while guest vocals by buddies Tim Vanhamel and Mark Lanegan prove to be the perfect icing on the cake. Beware and enjoy!

07/03/2008 After almost seven years of intense planning Tusken Coalition’s “Self-Titled” album sees the light of day. Fusing the raw sound of Hip Hop with the ethics of a Hardcore culture it embodies a dark sound, Tusken is here to ram itself into your cerebellum…

Originally formed by 3 sole members Sinic, Lethargy & Diverse, the groups story is a different one, the main members are from different musical backgrounds Sinic (A hardcore singer with Iron Monkey, Murder One & My War), Lethargy (Mc with Non-Thespian & Lyricist Hobos) & Diverse (Mc with Lyricist Hobos & founding member of the Beastmangoat Collective). All these elements and a passion for music combined to form a dense sounding and moody approach to Hip Hop. In 2002 Sincs untimely demise put the project on hold. Mc Blugrass stepped into the frame in 2007 along with Mc Kworyl and vocalist GZ-Tyrrel (3rd Stone & O.F.T.C) to reform the group, which has now set the wheels back in motion….

“Self-Titled” hosts an array of talent from all musical backgrounds featuring Mc’s, Vocalists, and live musicians, with one sole aim - to bring a sound that is hard hitting and unique. Featured artists include Grindcore singer; 8Ch (Phantom Limb Management), Mc’s; Duke01, Monkey D, Treble7, and Bass player RJ Chisholm (Old Basford). While production credits include Sinic, dWyZak (Sophie Johnson-Hill & Non-Thespian) Paul K (Basilica), Blugrass & The Moot Group…

With five new tracks combined with classic tunes dating back to 2000, the album is a complete chronology of music, which is set to have those speakers popping. The music itself pays homage to the days of original concepts with a direct approach to the true essence of creating music. The project is far from over, believe us, keep your ear to the ground for the rumble of the distant drums, “Self-Titled” marks the beginning, the darkness is here to bring forth the light…

BRYAN ADAMS

Canadian legend returns for 11th studio album, new single
and unique tour reaching 11 countries in 11 days

Bryan Adams storms back with his 11th studio album, entitled ‘11’ on March 17th through Polydor Records, packed full of unmistakeable rockers and signature ballads.

The lead single ‘I Thought I’d Seen Everything’ is a Bryan Adams classic in the making - a rocky, mid-tempo track that has already gone onto radio playlists on both side of the Atlantic. The track is out now and available to download for free from hmv.com.

‘11’ was recorded largely in hotel rooms and backstage dressing rooms around the world during the past two years and feature the return of his long time collaborator Jim Vallance on three cuts. The Adams/Vallance partnership was responsible for many of Bryan’s classic hits including ‘Heaven’,’ Summer of 69’ and ‘Run To You.’

From the uplifting ‘Broken Wings’ to the sultry ‘Mysterious Ways’ to the anthem-like ‘Something To Believe In’ [that’s boasts a chorus that should fill stadiums across the world], Bryan’s 11th recording of original material is yet another milestone in a career that has spanned two and a half decades. Whether it is the plaintive guitar solo in ‘Oxygen’ or the reflective strains of ‘I Ain’t Losin’ The Fight,’ the songs hold the listener and transport them, underscoring once again why Adams is in such demand as a songwriter and concert performer. 11 is destined to bring new live favourites to the stage that would easily sit alongside Adam’s extensive catalogue of greatest hits.

In support of the release of the album, Adams will be putting on a unique ‘11 concerts, 11 cities’ tour, taking in 11 different countries in just 11 days. The intimate shows at some spectacular venues will see Bryan perform an acoustic set, on stage, with just his guitar and harmonica. The London show will be on 11th March at St James Church in Piccadilly.

To coincide with the album and tour, an exhibition of Bryan Adams photographs will be held at London’s historic National Portrait Gallery, entitled ‘Modern Muses’.

The full list of dates for the ’11 Dates, 11 Cities’ tour in March are as follow:

Counting Crows

Release New Album

‘Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings’

Out March 24th

**plus headlining Wireless on Sunday July 6th**

Counting Crows are back with their first studio album in over five years entitled ‘Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings’ which will be released through Geffen Records on March 24th.

‘Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings’ will be the Counting Crows fifth studio album and comes almost 14 years after ‘Mr Jones’ became a surprise hit helping the band gain mass fame as well as selling seven million copies of their debut album ‘August and Everything After’ which went on to become the fastest selling album since Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’.

The album is split into two distinct themes with the first encompassing the ‘Saturday Nights’ part, presenting a descent into the darkness, the losing of your sense of self through drink and medications. The second side to the album, ‘Sunday Mornings’, is about the realisation of the next day, the hangover so to speak, it’s not so much redemption as understanding why Saturday Night happens and what next?

Counting Crows enlisted British producer and long time friend Gil Norton for the ‘Saturday Nights’ part of the album who (apart from previously working on the band’s second album ‘Recovering Satellites’) has also produced records for Pixies, Foo Fighters, Echo & The Bunnymen and Maximo Park. They then got Brian Deck (Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine) to produce the Sunday Mornings portion of the album in an attempt to emulate a modern version of some of the great folk based albums like Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’ and Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ which both had the feel of an unplugged album through innovative recording techniques.

The Counting Crows have always been more an album than a singles band and in the current byte-sized modern culture they feel it more important than ever not to cooperate with the quick fix, so enjoy ‘Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings’ in its entirety – the way a great album should be.

These Days: Released 7th April

The Hustle have announced their latest live shows as part of their campaign to promote the forthcoming single These Days.

Mon 25 Feb – BBC Wales Introducing
Sun 20 Mar - Barfly, Cardiff

The five piece rock/funk band from South Wales comprise of Lewis Fall (vocals/guitar), Wrighty (guitar), Thom Rowlands (keyboards), Phil Davies (bass/backing vocals) and Gethin Hale (drums). Their debut EP "Good Intentions" has recently been released on CD and online via iTunes worldwide. Following the success of the recording of the EP at Longwave Recording Studio, Cardiff, The Hustle are currently completing recording Things I Wish Were Mine with producer Romesh Dodangoda (Manic Street Preachers, The Blackout, Kids In Glass Houses, Dopamine)

Taking the best of American indie and melding it with British rock, the band create a ferocious live show. The Hustle live are about people in front of the stage dancing, pogoing, nodding their heads, or just doing whatever the hell they want to do. It's about having a laugh. It's about four-to-the-floor. It's about the incredible live performance you only get from a band which has such chemistry that they can finish each other's sentences - you don't often see a band who feed off each other's energy and fire as much as The Hustle. They seem to grow to fill a bigger stage, not by being outrageous, but with a cool self-confidence and belief in their ability and songs.

A balance of showmanship and studious, fluid playing, and of economy and extravagance in equal measures, all combining to create a loud, ballsy, powerhouse rhythm section that's tighter than a pair of 80s football shorts, pounding like a heartbeat through the band. Layering classic rock and funk infused guitars on top, with riffs that grab you by the throat and punchy solos that are over before it becomes dull. It's about a love of the sound of Hammond organs, Fender Rhodes pianos, clavichords and synths. Occasionally, it's about brass.

It's not about wearing scarves in all weathers and out-of-tune guitars, or standing up off stools and taking your blazer off when there's a key change. It's about nailing a great groove, then riding it for four minutes or so.

Workers work, Hustlers hustle.
