Billy Talent broke through in to the punk mainstream in 2003 with their eponymous self-titled debut album after a decade of hard work and non-stop touring. Hits including the boisterous ‘Try Honesty’ saw the album become triple Platinum in Canada, widespread success soon followed in Europe and the US which led to the band sharing stages with rock gods Jane’s Addiction and Buzzcocks.

Billy Talent recorded their second album at the end of last year at Bryan Adams’ Warehouse Studios in Vancouver with production duties overseen by Gavin Brown (who was at the helm of the band’s first album) and guitarist Ian D’Sa. Billy Talent II sees the band’s irresistible rock melodies taken to new heights as demonstrated on such stand out tracks as the anthemic ‘Surrender’, the raucous ‘Devil In A Midnight Mass’ and forthcoming single ‘Red Flag’.

‘Weapons’ album out 18th Sep

Much-loved rock-rap-poppers WEAPONS (formerly Weapons Of Mass Belief / W.O.M.B.) have finally crawled out of Courtyard studio where they have been recording their debut album – co-produced by Graeme Stewart (Radiohead), Damian Taylor (Prodigy/Bjork) and Yoad Nevo (Jem) – for a series of incendiary live shows.

Prior to the release of the album, a single – Love Is Thunder – comes out on September 4th: the band’s previous three singles received great support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq and Huw and Beth at Radio 1, as well as XFM, KERRANG! Radio and Total Rock Radio.

The album, WEAPONS, is a magnificent collection of vibrant, diverse music – hard as hell in places, and pure pop in others: and listen out for a guest appearance on The Thieves from the sister of Weapons’ vocalists Justin and Georgia G – the multi-platinum-selling Jem!

WEAPONS: THE STORY…

Justin, Georgia G and Mo-laudi (vocals) / Blair Macann (guitar) / Pete Cherry (bass) / Tasha Baylis (drums)

The Weapons’ story starts in the sleepy seaside town of Penarth in Wales, where Justin and his sister Georgia grew up. In the quiet environment of the Welsh coast, music was one of the few distractions available. Radiohead, Prodigy, Beasties, Pixies and The Smiths all played their part in defining the musical terrain, as did enthusiastic parents who encouraged their creativity. Recording equipment and instruments littered the household which also inspired their other sister, singer/songwriter Jem, whose debut album “Finally Woken” (SonyBmg) went double platinum last year.

A move to London via university followed for the siblings, but their capacity for new music remained ravenous, leading them down surprising new avenues: inspired by hip-hop’s rhythms and its ability to communicate complex ideas, the brother/sister combo started rapping.

“For both of us I think we’ve always had big mouths, because we’re Welsh,” says Justin with a smile. “I wanted to explore certain things and the only way was in that form. Dylan Thomas used words in a rhythmic way – concentrating as much on the flow of words as their meaning. I’m interested in meaning but more than ever I just love the sound of words, whether I’m singing or rapping.”

Georgia’s first performance as an MC was actually in prison. Sent down for nine months for a drug case that caused a media frenzy, Georgia got a group of yardie prostitutes to showcase with her to the rest of the inmates. “It rocked! I knew then that rap was a wicked way to communicate the inner angst!”
Whilst Justin and Georgia were planning the band’s future in a north London pub, Mo-laudi overheard as he was serving them drinks. He’s a multilingual South African from the tropic of Capricorn, born of activist parents in the days of the struggle. He grew up listening to maskanda, folk, dinaka, mbaqanga, kwaito, ragga and hip-hop. After winning his first rap competition in high school, Mo started his own hip-hop nightclub.

Something gelled. The three started writing together: three views and three very different styles. By February 2003 they had enough material to know what they were doing was worthwhile. But they needed a band to give a rock ‘n’ roll framework to their extreme vocals.

Tasha, drums, was the first. She’s played drums since she was twelve, and despite her diminutive size, she beats those drums harder than most fellas. So much so that The Verve’s drummer heard a demo she made and commented “Bloody hell, he hits the drums hard!” Tasha: “I get a lot of attention from blokes (and females) which is an added bonus - I think it can be very eye catching being a female drummer.”

Blair, guitars, was the chef in Mo’s pub. He’s from New Zealand, and an obsessive guitarist. Justin describes him as “the mysterious, philosopher-type, with a temper as bad as Gordon Ramsey in Hell’s Kitchen - he likes throwing plates at Mo!”

The crew were completed by Pete, bass. From Lowestoft, Pete once worked with Ed Graham, The Darkness’ drummer, breading chicken giblets on a conveyer belt. He was nearly deported from Norway for wrecking a hotel, and currently earns his dough writing music for porn flicks. Credits include "To the Manor Porn", "Customs & Sexise" and "Pump Friction".

Originally called “Weapons of Mass Belief/ W.O.M.B.” the band’s name arose as a way of expressing the media’s role in the machinery of modern belief systems. It was only earlier this year that the band decided to shorten the name to “Weapons”.

The band played their first gig in June 2003 at The Verge in London’s Kentish Town, where the three rappers formed an unlikely yet compelling trio. Infectiously energetic, they ploughed a course through metal, punk, ska and post rock, aided by collaborator Carlos Da Jackal’s furious scratching.

Holed up in a north London studio over that new year, Weapons recorded their first demos with Damian Taylor (Prodigy/Bjork/U.N.K.L.E.). On the back of the recordings, they were invited to Texas to play the 2004 SXSW festival. Selected by Music Week alongside Franz Ferdinand and The Hives as one of the buzz bands of the week, Weapons were soon doing a radio 1 session for Beth & Huw. Later in the year they released their first UK single Terrorist Youth to critical acclaim on indie American Blood, with plays across the evening sessions of Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq and XFM’s Ian Camfield. They ended 2004 with dates on Radio 1’s In new music we trust tour.

Following the success of their second single Black Line Ninja in March 2005, the band went over to the US to play their first LA show at The Viper Rooms in May. When they got back, Weapons were fortunate to start working with Graeme Stewart (Radiohead’s engineer, Amnesiac/Hail to the thief) who recorded a limited edition third single Death of a nation, which was released in November.

In early 2006 the band finished writing their much anticipated debut album and recorded it with Graeme at Courtyard Studios in Oxfordshire. Recalling a multitude of musical references – Pixies, RATM, Muse, Supergrass, Eminem – the album is an exhilarating 36 minutes through the heads of this genre-crossing sextet. The self-titled record is released through the band’s own label – Wicked Old Lady – on Sept 18th 2006.

“Gloriously infectious” The Guardian

“Utterly, utterly thrilling” NME ****

“Wolfmother’s debut finally arrives, and it’s a corker!” Rock Sound, ****

Fresh from a memorable and (literally) storming T in the Park performance last month, Wolfmother return with the third single from their critically-applauded and self-titled debut which has seen widespread recognition on a worldwide scale.

Wolfmother still sit comfortably in the UK Top 30 after three months (25 last week), Billboard US Top 70 during the same period and last month they passed triple-Platinum in Australia. And they’ve only just begun.

Wolfmother’s adrenaline-fuelled, high-octane performances have gained themselves a loyal, enthusiastic and rapidly growing fanbase. The live experience continues this side of the Atlantic when they return to the UK later this month to play the main stage at Reading & Leeds festivals.

New single ‘Love Train’ is currently the soundtrack for the new iPod advert in their US, Canadian and Australian campaigns, reinforcing the increasing and infectious hold Wolfmother possess over the cross-generational audience they’ve created. Old and young, they don’t care; Wolfmother encapsulates such spirit that it is impossible to refuse their hollering anthems… and you would be a fool not to.

But do not fear, Wolfmother are back on our British shores again in November to headline MTV2’s Brand Spanking New tour with the Brixton Academy tickets already almost sold out.

In addition, Johnny Knoxville and the folks at Jackass have also taken a shine to the band with ‘Joker and the Thief’ being the lead track to their new Spike Jonze produced Jackass 2 movie due out in the UK in October. This film is set to be huge and Wolfmother’s new friends Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O appear in the video to Joker and the Thief (single out November).

29/08/2006 Teeth Of The Hydra – ‘Greenland’ (Tee Pee) Release Date: 9th October 2006

There's a breed of modern day bands that have effectively put the 'heavy' back into heavy metal – as mammoth riffs and mid-paced tempos do battle with lyrics that appear to be straight out of classic novels. Ohio-based trio Teeth of the Hydra are masters of this yet unnamed metal sub-genre, regaling their listeners with a concept album detailing the harsh arctic life while pummeling them with "1970's black metal" (as group mastermind, Matt Miner describes their music). The group originally formed in 2002, and has been slogging it out ever since. But with a new album on fierce metal indie label Tee Pee Records, Greenland, and a solid following in their hometown of Columbus and the nearby region, Teeth of the Hydra appear ready to break on through to the other side.

"We went to Chicago," explains Miner, singer/guitarist for Teeth of the Hydra. "We basically lived in the studio. All of our gear became the living room - we brought a bunch of toys and went nuts for seven days. Probably could have been there for a lot longer than that, but that would probably just be indulgent. I think we did alright on the vibe of the record."

Joining Miner in the band is one behemoth of a rhythm section – bassist Matt Bailey and drummer Jamie Stillman. Miner: "We were just a bunch of friends from way back in the day. I lived in a one-bedroom apartment, and all I had in my apartment was a full-stack, a guitar, and a distortion pedal. Jamie played guitar in a fairly well known band called The Party of Helicopters. We played a lot of shows with them, then our drummer moved to New York City, and Jamie called, demanding to join the band. 'I'm your new fuckin' drummer' - that's what he said [laughs]. We've been kicking around with him since 2003."

With such bands as Entombed, Celtic Frost, Amebix, and the Melvins serving as prime influences, Teeth of the Hydra got the ball rolling with a self-released debut album. Miner: "I started a label, VolumeHammer, and put out our first CD, We Are the Fantasy. We’re sold out and probably won’t repress it."
It wasn't long before the head of Tee Pee Record, Tony Presedo, came across the band, and liked what he heard. "Tony emailed us out of the blue - to this day, I still don't understand how he heard the music. We were playing two or three shows in New York City, and he said he was going to come out." Soon after, Teeth of the Hydra found themselves at work on their Tee Pee debut with producer Sanford Parker, who has worked with the likes of Pelican, Unearthly Trance and Buried at Sea.

Miner also points out that for the most part, Greenland works as a concept album of sorts. "The album is based upon stories about 'the Viking life.’ When the Vikings began settling in Greenland, there were Inuit that already lived there. The Vikings began to die because they wouldn't ask the Inuit how to fish through the ice. The songs have a running thread of being set in the arctic, so we decided to call the album Greenland. ‘Sawing Through the Ice' is about falling through a crevice on a fishing trip [laughs]. The slow song, 'The Garden of Rotten Teeth,' is about a guy who is arrested in his sleep and never knows what crime he committed. He is going to prison, which includes a journey by rail from Moscow to Siberia, to work in a nuclear city - radiation rotting his teeth out. I grew up where all these ancient burial mounds are, and the song 'Voices Over Conus' - it's about the secrets of the burial mounds."

While the heaviness of the trio comes across in the grooves of Greenland, it's their live show where they give a whole new meaning to the word 'heavy.' "It's a lot more unhinged, that's for sure. A lot more fury, not to say that the album's not, but there’s a lot of feedback. It’s really probably too loud [laughs]." And it shouldn't be long before the group pulls up to a venue near you. "Definitely going to be up and down the East Coast in 2006, and we'll be on the West Coast in 2007."

JULIETTE AND THE LICKS RELEASE SINGLE “HOT KISS”

7” VINYL/CAT NO: HOFF020S: HOT KISS/INSIDE THE CAGE

CD/CAT NO: HOTT020SX: HOT KISS/LUCKY FOR YOU

On 26th September 06, Juliette and the Licks will be releasing the first single to be lifted from the band’s second album “Four On The Floor” which is due in October this year.

Entitled “Hot Kiss”, it will be available on 7” vinyl and CD. The vinyl has a track taken from the album, “Inside the Cage” – re-mixed by Jason Womack the band’s bass player; the CD includes “Lucky for You” which is exclusive to this release and was recorded at the same time as the album, featuring guest drummer Dave Grohl.

It’s rare that you’ll find female desire given such a full-blooded and convincing representation in rock as it does on “Hot Kiss”, as a pair of guitars strut and spark over Juliette’s Jett-meets-Joplin gutsy holler for this sizzling paean to lust in all its true heat, sweat and savagery. With its instantly addictive chorus, it showcases both the ‘Licks talent for kick-ass songwriting and Juliette’s ability to get down to the real dirt and grit of emotions. Juliette says “I wrote this in my little bunk on the road. Todd (Morse – the band’s guitarist) demoed the music and put it on a CD for me. The chorus came to me instantly. I recorded it in my bunk on the bus in my tape recorder, ‘Hot Kiss, won't you tell me what you miss boy, blind love you got me spinning like a wind up toy’. I was on the road missing my man at the time so that's all it’s about. We finished writing it at various sound checks. Then started playing it live. I like to do that and test it out on the audience. Sometimes even before I'm done with lyrics.” The single got its first play this week on Zane’s Radio One show, and its first exclusive video showing on Channel 4 last week watched by 400,000 people.

One track from the album “Killer” is available as a download on the band’s website, it’s had 56,000 downloads so far.

OASIS

The definitive collection, the ultimate competition…

As previously announced, Oasis will release their ‘Best Of’ collection, “Stop The Clocks” on November 20th, 2006. To celebrate the release the album will be accompanied by the first ever on the road film of Oasis, “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down” which will be screened in selected cities across the world in November. You and a friend could be among the first to see it and, even better, you can choose where in the world you go, and get there for free. If that’s not enough you also get five days accommodation thrown in for good measure. From Tokyo to New York and Sydney to London, once the venues are confirmed one lucky winner will be able to choose their dream destination.

“Lord Don’t Slow Me Down”, directed by renowned promo director Baillie Walsh, is compiled from a year’s filming with the band on their mammoth “Don’t Believe The Truth” world tour 2005/6 and follows one of the world’s greatest rock n roll band behind the scenes and in front of the fans across the globe. With unique access to the band throughout the tour, “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down” is the ultimate Oasis documentary and a must see for fans.

To win this superb opportunity, it seems appropriate that you have to prove yourself the ultimate Oasis fan. Whilst we all know that “Stop The Clocks” will be with us in November, the tracklisting is, at the moment, a closely guarded secret, having been chosen by the band from their incredible collection of songs. What we want you to do is tell us what you think the 18 tracks are and the running order in which they appear on the album. We’ve already revealed that “Acquiesce”, “Half The World Away”, “Supersonic”, “Wonderwall” and “The Importance of Being Idle” are on there, which leaves 13 tracks to add and the running order to decipher.

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly

‘The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager (Part 1)’ / 11th September 2006

20 year old wunderkind Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly (aka Sam Duckworth to his mates) releases a new single ‘The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager (Part 1)’ on 11th September on Atlantic Records. It follows up on the success of his limited edition debut Atlantic Records AA side ‘I Spy / Call Me Ishmael’ which was play listed by Radio 1.

Written on a train during his gig-to-gig, sofa-to-floor, bus-to-train journeys across Britain (Duckworth spent 2005 prolifically gigging, clocking up over 160 gigs since the start of 2005), ‘Chronicles…’ is self-produced and is another superb example of Duckworth’s forceful, emotional melody, delicate then furious acoustic guitar and twitchy electronic beats. It’s about “the emotional issues that bubble up for you, about meeting people on the road, and how they end up becoming some of your best friends ‘cause you share common experiences”.

‘Chronicles…’ will be available on 7” vinyl and two CD formats. The 7” will feature brand new track ‘The Romance Versus The Rational’ and the CD will feature another brand new song ‘The Children Are (The Consumers Of) The Future’. Meanwhile, a second CD will include a remix of the lead track by Yourcodenameis:milo’s Justin Lockey, plus the ‘Chronicles…’ video and the full, uncut video for ‘I Spy’.

The single is taken from Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly’s highly anticipated debut album of the same name. ‘The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager’ will be released on 18th September through Atlantic Records.

Having previously toured with acts as diverse as Funeral For A Friend, The Automatic and Forward Russia and following appearances at this year’s Download, Truck, Electric Gardens and Boardmasters festivals, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly will be performing throughout summer across the UK. He will also be embarking on a UK headline tour throughout September and October.

Cute Is What We Aim For
Single ‘There’s A Class For This’
4th Sept 06 / Fueled By Ramen

Introducing Cute Is What We Aim For who release their debut album ‘The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch’ on September 18th through Fueled By Ramen Records. The album is preceded by debut single ‘There’s A Class For This’ available on limited edition shaped picture disk, out September 4th.

‘The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch’, has entered the record books following its sensational first week of sales in America. It is officially the fastest selling release in the 10-year history of the Fueled By Ramen label, home to such heavyweights as Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, The Academy Is…and many others.

What makes the phenomenal sales all the more impressive is the fact that thus far Cute Is What We Aim For have received only limited radio and TV airplay. Rather, the Buffalo-based quartet have built their loyal fan base via such online outlets as PureVolume, LiveJournal, and MySpace, where they currently log well over 100,000 “friends.”
