After what seemed like the longest sound check in human history Fightstar finally took to the stage. Bringing a crowd which had been mostly dead for the night to shocking life. With a mix of tracks across their entire history Fightstar proved why they're fans are so loyal and were quiet frankly one of the best live acts I've seen in a long time.
Coming out with a bit of promotion they began with "Colours Bleed To Red" and "The English Way." Both great tracks to get the fans going (as if they needed more) before they hit us with "Paint Your Target" which saw the pit explode into a frenzy. Following up with the much slower "Calling on All Stations" didn't make too much sense to me as I felt it killed the momentum they had going but it is a very good song and was great to hear live. "Palaniuks Laughter" had the reaction you'd expect once again causing everything to go up in a blast of pushing and head banging
"Grand Unification" again, got exactly what you'd expect out of what has easily become Fightstars signature song. "War Machine" a personal favourite track of mine from the new album followed but seemed lost on a good portion of the crowd but this didn't stop my enjoyment.
"Mercury Summer" got everyone's interest back and was followed by another feel-good single "We Apologise for Nothing."
"Never Change" was the last of the new tracks played this evening and was possibly the weaker track of the night. The classics "Floods" and "Lost Like Tears in Rain" bought the show to a close with that lovely warm nostalgia feeling.
Except not, Because of course there was an Encore. That's right, bands still do the fake leaving thing. Charlie came out solo for "Amethyst" a classic track from "They liked you better when you were dead" before being joined by the band for "Deathcar" which, in my opinion, is the strongest way for them to finish. Its brutal lyrics, heavy guitars and loud drums plus the unprecedented crowd reaction made this the track of the concert.
All in all it was a great concert, the venue was nice and the time killing options around Birmingham were ranged enough to make turning up as early as we did worthwhile.
