Date: 11 October 2005
Venue: Bristol Academy
Picture the scene …….. it’s 10.45pm and we are sat outside the Bristol Academy on the old steps that used to lead up to the Ice Skating Rink, they are cold, wet metal, and covered in bird droppings ! below us we can see fans of the bands and we are just chatting away, here’s how it went
Upload How do you think your show went tonight ?
Lars Tonight I thought I had more energy, I think it’s a fun tour, a good mixture of bands. This tour has been great, I think people should check out all of the bands and buy their CD’s . I really like The Army Of Freshmen , I like this music, it’s happy music, all this tour is happy music, people think it’s just kiddy music but that’s not true . Bowling for Soup have swearing in their lyrics, so it’s not just for little kids it’s cool.
Upload What brought you into doing what you do ?
Lars I was in like punk bands in high school but at the same time I was playing with my computer doing kinda like beat stuff and techno stuff on the side and performing by myself with costumes and stuff, doing this really theatrical stage show in high school. Then I went to College and got more into hip-hop and did a late night hip-hop show on my college station, then I went to University and realized that I wanted to take it more in the rap direction rather than the techno direction. So then sophomore year I was over here to study at Oxford for like an overseas thing and basically I was performing just local pubs in Oxford and I met the label that put out my first album, it kinda just happened, it was really cool.
Upload Where do the Ninja Turtles come into it ?
Lars I have loved them forever, I used to collect the toys and they really inspired my imagination , just playing with all the figures. I hear they call it Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles over here because the name was too violent because of world was 2 and Japan, like they were kamikaze turtles . It’s so random that they were so popular ‘cos they are just a weird marketing thing, those guys made so much money.
Upload We were told that you were born in Essex UK, is this true ?
Lars No I was born in America in Berkeley and I live in California, but I lived here in 2003 in Oxford. Where’s Essex ? is it near Oxford ?
Upload What do Supergrass think of you using their sample ?
Lars IWell they heard it and really like it so now we are waiting for their publishing company to clear it so we can use it.
Upload What are you doing after this tour ?
Lars I’m doing a tour with this band ‘Fightstar’ and then I do a tour with this band ‘Test Icicles’ they are really hip. I leave the UK in early November, then I am going to finish mixing my album that comes out in March. Then I’m off to Japan in January which is really cool, I’ve never been to Japan but I hear the fans are very enthusiastic.
Upload So how did you get Bowling For Soup to come out and join you on stage during ‘Signing Emo’ ?
Lars We did this tour in America from January to May of the whole United States and we were doing it then , what happened is that they found out about me from this guy who signed them who used to work at a different label, so they heard ‘Signing Emo’ first and they thought it would be really fun to play that part. They thought it would be really good to come on stage, what’s cool is that I really think it makes that song so much better live, what’s nice is that I think it really legitimises the song for e and shows that they are supportive of what I am doing and it’s really an honour.
Upload What do you want for Christmas ?
Lars Oh Christmas, I really want a new acoustic guitar , that was my first instrument and I figured everything out on the computer from the guitar, I learnt the music theory from the guitar. I play on my EP a little bit and on my new album, but live I don’t usually play, because there is just too much going on and it’s hard to rap and play guitar.
