TFF Music Review
Paedophilia, breasts and potato farming with The XCorvettes
Live @ The Comedy, London 05/04/06

We have seen the future. And it's one boy, two girls and a communal pot of red eyeshadow.

With only four gigs in the bag under this name, London-based The XCorvettes already sound astoundingly accomplished, with everything down to the between-song banter nailed. Opener 'Shut Up' sets the tone for the ensuing half-hour, full of catchy refrains and a sound that is instantly both new and warmly familiar. As the crowds begin to arrive, they are treated to such delectable delights as 'An Alcoholic State of Mind', which is occasionally reminiscent of T. Rex, and the instantly infectious 'Talk It Over' displaying an array of more modern influences. Such songs are augmented by shared vocals, allowing for both a pleasing contrast and variety. Another distinctive feature the three-piece boast is the drum machine. This provides not only spatial economy, but also a thumping, very '80s backdrop for Jonny, Sally and Lucy's respective guitar, bass and keys to build upon. As well as this, the clear pop influences in their music would see them not out of place on commercial radio or, dare we say it, Top of the Pops.

The post-gig friendly introduction and chit-chat with the band and their self-styled "general dogsbody" then quickly morphed into something the New Musical Express would give their right testicle for (without meaning to insinuate the NME actually has balls). A guerrilla interview. Although utterly unprepared for this eventuation, we launched into it with gusto, putting our memories to the ultimate test.

The band themselves are just as anyone would want their popstars to be - genuine, amusing and friendly even to the drunken football fans from the upstairs bar. Not to mention willing to put up with our inane off-topic chatter as well as our questions, and it is by virtue of this that we are able to produce our essential guide for all XCorvette converts. They'll also happily sign merchandise - even if we are now the proud owners of 2 CDs with crude drawings of breasts adorning the sleeves.

The band also cite the importance of myspace.com - where they have found an audience in anyone from fifteen to fifty - in spreading the good word. (Though any younger fans ought not to be cause for the slightest signs of interest, unless one wishes to be subject to accusations of paedophilia from the band in question.) And it is thanks to the songs on this website that TFF decided to take a chance on their suggestion and head out to see the group on less than a days notice. If this is not evidence that myspace is more than just young teenagers who seemingly cant get enough of taking photos of themselves at jaunty angles, we dont know what is. Quite simply, we couldnt really wish for a better band to launch TFFs online expansion. Simply the breast.

THE CORVETTES ‘Introducing…’ (2005) www.myspace.com/thecorvettes

A new band fronted by Sally Lodge and Jonny Goode, who both handle vocal duties. This is a six track taster from their upcoming debut album and it isn’t half bad! Musically there is plenty going on with the female vocals having a mellow vibe whilst the male vocals add a bit of menace to the mix. For comparisons it defiantly has some Pixies like guitar, whilst a song like ‘Like I Do’ is catchy and mellow enough to warrant some serious daytime radio airplay. ‘Need A Little Sunshine’ is another stand out track and the Corvettes are a band to check out (see the link to hear some free music) and watch over the coming months.
