Went and watched Millencolin and Flogging Molly at the weekend in Manchester with some mates; had an awesome time, got pretty drunk so missed the all of The Unseen's set and most of Randy's. Though saw Randy support Bad Religion a year ago at Astoria in London and they were good so was a little dissapointed!
Flogging Molly were brilliant fun, everyone was dancing even though I suspect
most of the crowd had no idea who they were...They started with 'Drunken Lullabies'
and ended with 'What's left of the flag' - both taken from the album 'Drunken
Lullabies' and both brilliant songs and even better live! Their set included
some of my favourites including Seven Deadly Sins, Within a Mile of Home and
Whistles the wind and even managed to get a political ramble about George
Bush in there (can I never go to a gig again without his name being mentioned!!)
before launching into 'Tobacco Island'. Great set, great band.
Millencolin were outstanding also but following on from such a high energy
band like FM was always going to be tricky. I didn't think they did themselves
any favours by starting off with one of their slower one's, the name of which
evades me...however, a little "hello" speech and the pace picked
up with the band launching into the catchy 'Fox'. Particular highlights which
I can remember (taking into acount my alcohol-blood ration at this point)
was hearing tracks from the new album live for the first time - 'Ray' was
a good one, 'Cash or Clash' good for a bit of a sing song. However, the best
part of the night was when the singer whipped out an acoustic and started
playing 'Ballard' from the album Pennybridge. It was a wkd contrast to the
night and I could sense everyone was well up for a bit of a 'lighters out'
moment.
When 'No Cigar' I pulled my mates into the pit for one last song, which turned
into 3 or four when they came back on for a deserved encore:)
Overall a great night, finished up in 42nd St. A bit too 'indie' for me but
a certain young lady always drags me along because she seems to have a fond
attachment to the place...and I didn't really care because at £1.20
vodka red bull I was not exactly sober anyway:)
I'd give it a 8/10.
