Wembley Arena would seem cavernous when empty, I'm sure. Tonight it feels hotter and sweatier and stuffier than Camden Underworld. Packed full of a variety of people: from teenagers sporting military style jackets, to "cool" mums and dads bringing along their kids. Only one support act tonight, and though I had heard of Thursday before, I didn't know a single song. Then their set started, after which most of the crowd had the word THURSDAY burned into their memories forever. People were jumping up and down, those who knew the words were singing along. Mosh pits opened up and everyone was having a great time. It left me wanting to go and hear more music by them, which is what I would call an excellent support act. I
must say I was a bit peeved with someone for ruining the next part for
me... Gerard Way led the crowd through the entirety of The Black Parade, highlights had to be Welcome To The Black Parade - because of the way each member the crowd seemed to sing the words as if they were up on stage - and Mama - during which the stage was engulfed in flame to turn it into hell. There are quite a few ballads on the album, which gave a few breathers to the set. Then after that magical performance from The Black Parade, after the last piano notes from Blood have played from the speakers, out come My Chemical Romance. Wearing much more standard attire, MCR now seem to let the songs do the talking. They play songs from Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge including the positively necessary I'm Not Okay. I had the biggest grin on my face throughout the whole song! Poor Frank Iero... he fell ill about halfway through. It was pretty obvious that he wasn't well; he was on the floor for quite a lot of the set and wasn't doing much leaping about. There was a handy guitar tech to take his place, but I hope Frank gets well soon. Shame they didn't play Headfirst For Halos, but I'm sure everyone had at least one song from the debut album they would have liked to hear. On a more serious note, the crush was the worst I've ever experienced in my life. I was a couple of rows back from the front, almost centre stage. I couldn't move and I couldn't get out for a drink. Despite our cries for water, people at the front were still drinking whole glasses themselves instead of sharing. When I see people going over the barriers unconscious, I realise that maybe it's a bit too hot and crowded up the front. I think "Maybe we should move back". The problem was that people continued to push forward, selfishly deciding that there would be enough room for them. So the crowd made my gig experience very bad indeed. Still,
I'd give it 4 out of 5. For a near-death experience it was excellent!
