A rocking New Year!

It’s a cold night on the first Sunday after New Year, so what is there to do? Make another attempt to finish off the leftover Turkey? Decide who to regift those unwanted presents to this year? Or get down to the Snooty Fox, probably one of West Yorkshires finest small venues and take in an evening of crunching metal, soaring riffs & thunderous drums? Surprisingly Wakefield’s metal population seems to have taken the first two options to heart. And they missed out on a truly rocking night organised by new promotions outfit Raised Horns.

The first band to wish us a Metal New Year is Northamptonshires Adremelech. Vocalist Dale Lindsell assaults our ears with a full on death metal range of glass shattering screaming and satanic growls that seem to summon hellish minions right onto the stage. The small crowd whilst not mobile give these thrashers an enthusiastic cheer after every song as they pound vigorously on, by no means letting the empty space in front of the stage drag them down.

A big change of style from next band Mantra – though that’s not to say they don’t rock the (by now growing but still fairly thin) crowd big time. This three piece make a big noise, dreadlocked vocalist/guitarist Oli whips up a storm with a soulful bluesy voice and his Zakk Wylde inspired guitar playing, proving that the art of the solo is not dead. Providing an exciting blend of Black Label Society, Rage Against The Machine, Pearl Jam and Pantera stirred together and given a fresh lick of paint by bass player Cat and drummer Garth who both impress with their stylish and solid rhythm section.

Allerjen (recently voted 6th best unsigned band in the uk in the Terrorizer 2005 readers poll) conjure up a hoedown all of their own next, vocalist and bassist John Dower taking on a crazed aspect as his growled vocals and frenzied bass batter the room. Guitars and Drums powered by the two Pauls (Wilkinson and Tarbuck respectively) pump up the volume and odes to The Transformers (“Until All Are One” & “Fire In The Sky”) provide a fun backdrop to a band that are heavy end to end. They’re even joined by Mike Hyslop to provide guest vocals on “Nowhere” who proceeds to help the boys rip it up just a little more.

Seven Years Dead are last up and top off an excellent evening of metal mayhem. Vocalist Jezzo rips up the stage like a hyperactive Whitfield Crane, meaty bass lines give some of the songs a Korn like vibe, but any resemblance to nu-metal is entirely incidental as the band throw themselves though a solid set of rocking material that throw more than just a nod to the likes of Slayer, Pantera and Anthrax. The crowd can’t help but be moved by the funky bass of G and the soaring guitar abused (sometimes to the point of destruction, requiring a quick guitar change mid song!) so expertly by Pete. Dave the drummer pounds away ably at the back providing a solid and energetic beat as Jezzo calls for a circle pit and ends up wrestling and moshing wildly with help from Allerjens John Dower.

A successful evening music wise. Four varied, tight and professional sounding bands for £4 is a bargain not to be sniffed at, especially when the bill is all killer and no filler like this. Expect more from all these talents.
